The Big Short star reacts to his nomination
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards yesterday, Thursday 10 December.
The Big Short confirmed its position as a major contender in the awards race with four nominations, including two of the five nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, for stars Christian Bale and Steve Carell. The film also features Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling.
Upon hearing the news on Thursday morning, here’s what Carell had to say.
“I was asleep and my assistant woke me up with the good news,” said the Big Short star. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be nominated along with the film, Adam [McKay], Christian, Brad, and Charles [Randolph]. But it means so much more knowing that Ryan didn’t get one.
So much thought and work and effort was put into this movie. Everyone worked so incredibly hard, but the most difficult part for all of us was just putting up with Ryan. I guess it’s true what they say though – all the puppy dog eyes and washboard abs in the world don’t get you a Golden Globe nomination”.
Added Carell, who was Oscar-nominated last year for his performance in Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher: “He’s actually gotten uglier, right? That’s what happens when you’re not nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. Not that I’d know.”
A spokesperson for Carell declined to comment further.
